The Recreation Department operates 4 facilities on 280 acres south of Roosevelt Road. All of these properties were acquired as part of the Village’s storm water detention system. Recreation is a secondary, but important, use. The Village Links of Glen Ellyn is a 27-hole public golf course on 240 acres. This facility, which opened in 1967, features a championship 18-hole course, a regulation 9-hole course and a driving range. The Village Links Clubhouse, which includes a Golf Shop and Restaurant, is open year round. Village Residents are eligible for discounted green fees and priority in scheduling tee times. Panfish Park , 18 acres is a passive use park with a walking/jogging trail and two ponds. Lambert Lake Nature Preserve , 22 acres. Largely unmaintained, this preserve includes a large lake and a walking path. Co-Op Park , 1 acre of Village land along with one acre of Glen Ellyn Park District land. This park is managed jointly by both the Recreation Department and the Park District. A fifth facility, the Village Green athletic fields, 35 acres, located on the west side of Lambert Road is owned by the Village of Glen Ellyn and is operated by the Glen Ellyn Park District under a rolling lease that began in 2003. |

STORM WATER DETENTION |
| |
A sophisticated storm water detention system is incorporated into the properties of the Recreation Department. There are twenty-one lakes at the Village Links, one lake at Lambert Lake Nature Preserve and two lakes at Panfish Park. These lakes and the areas surrounding them are designed to hold storm water during major rain falls. All of the lakes are connected by under ground stormwater pipes. During a major storm, the system is designed to hold storm water and flood the Recreation properties. The storm water is released downstream at a safe rate before any lasting damage is done to the golf course or other parks.
This storm water system detains approximately 30% of the stormwater that falls in Glen Ellyn and is the primary reason that the Village developed and operates these properties. This storm water detention system is maintained and operated with golf course user fees. |

FUNDING |
| |
No tax dollars are used to maintain or operate Village of Glen Ellyn Recreation Department facilities. The Recreation Department operates solely on user fees. Residents pay golf green fees at roughly a 40% discount off market prices.
Resident use of the golf course and parks is subsidized by profits generated from non-resident golf sales. These profits are also used to maintain and operate the storm water detention system. |

BACKYARD WILDLIFE PROGRAM |
| |
The Village Links, the first public golf course in the world to be certified as a Wildlife Sanctuary by Audubon International, founded the Glen Ellyn Backyard Wildlife Program in 1995.
The Glen Ellyn Backyard Wildlife Program is an outreach program founded on the belief that if we all work towards conservation and habitat enhancement on our own properties, we can create a collective wildlife conservation area. The staff at the Village Links hopes that you join them in this important effort!
Currently, there are about 350 families that are members of the Glen Ellyn Backyard Wildlife Program. Members receive our quarterly newsletter, Backyard Briefings, and are eligible to work towards having their property certified as a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Membership in the Glen Ellyn Backyard Wildlife Program is free.
