Streets

The Operations Division is also responsible for 83 miles of Village-owned roadways, including street patching, signs and pavement markings, snow and ice management, sidewalk improvement program, street sweeping, parking meter maintenance, and parking lot and street light maintenance in the Central Business District.

The Public Works Department fabricates all road signs in-house, paints all stop bars and crosswalks on an emergency basis and coordinates and performs maintenance on traffic signals and street lights.  Resurfacing and reconstruction of Village streets is included in the 20-year Street and Storm Sewer Program, which ensures that Village streets do not deteriorate excessively. For more information on the 20-year program, please visit the Engineering and Construction webpage.

The Village of Glen Ellyn maintains a majority of streets within the Village limits; however several major thoroughfares are maintained by the DuPage County Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Transportation.  Geneva Road, St. Charles Road and Park Boulevard south of Raintree Drive/Buena Vista Drive are maintained by the DuPage County Department of Transportation.  If you have questions or concerns regarding a street maintained by DuPage County, please call 630-407-6900.  Roosevelt Road (Route 38), Route 53, and Butterfield Road (Route 56) are the responsibility of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).  If you have questions or concerns regarding a street maintained by IDOT, please call 847-705-4000.

One of the more unique street attributes of the Village is the concrete markers used for street signs. The white pillar markers were installed as a Works Progress Administration project in 1940, at the same time as sidewalks, storm sewers and the Sunset Park swimming pool. Street names, which appear vertically on the street posts, needed to be repainted on a regular basis to remain visible. Recently, the Public Works Department sign operations began upgrading the street marker posts using retro-reflecting sign materials rather than paint. This increases the visibility of street names for emergency responders and reduces maintenance by eliminating the need for annual painting.
