Snow Removal

The Village of Glen Ellyn’s Public Works Department is committed to providing residents with efficient and thorough snow management services. Meeting this level of service is no easy task. Falling temperatures, snow, ice and freezing rain are formidable opponents.  The Village’s Storm Management Operation is designed to ensure that the Public Works Department can deal with the forces of nature.

Public Works is responsible for all of the Village-owned streets within the corporate limits of Glen Ellyn. The Village is divided into five sections to facilitate snow removal, with one or more drivers assigned to each section. When three inches or more of snow has fallen, additional personnel man snow throwers to clear a four-foot wide path on all sidewalks in the Central Business District and any sidewalks where the Village owns the adjacent property.

The Village is not responsible for snow removal on streets maintained by the DuPage County Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Transportation.  These streets include Geneva Road, St. Charles Road, Park Boulevard south of Raintree Drive/Buena Vista Drive (DuPage County Department of Transportation), Roosevelt Road (Route 38), Route 53, and Butterfield Road (Route 56) (Illinois Department of Transportation) (IDOT).  If you have questions or concerns regarding snow removal for a street maintained by DuPage County, please call 630-407-6900.  If you have questions or concerns regarding snow removal for a street maintained by IDOT, please call 847-705-4000.

Keep your Mailbox Safe during Snow Season

Keep your mailbox safe from snowplows in the winter by ensuring that they comply with Village Code height and setback requirements.  If your mailbox has been damaged, please report the damage to the Public Works Department at 630-469-6756 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If your mailbox cannot be repaired, a temporary mailbox will be left at your home until a permanent installation can be made in the spring.

Parking and Other Reminders during Snow Season

By Village ordinance, there is no parking on Village streets if 2 or more inches of snow have fallen, and overnight parking is not permitted on Village streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. year-round. Village ordinance also prohibits residents from pushing snow from their driveway into the street as it creates a hazard for drivers – residents doing this may be liable for any accident caused as a result of these actions.
