Forestry

The Village of Glen Ellyn places great pride in the trees that enhance its beauty, even deriving its name from the trees that surround Lake Ellyn. For over 25 years, the Village has been named a Tree City USA for its commitment to enhancing and protecting trees located within the Village.

The Public Works Department directs programs to enhance the health and diversity of trees located on public grounds. Glen Ellyn features a variety of spectacular trees within the Village. To learn more about the Village’s most prized trees, the ‘Gems of Glen Ellyn Tree Guide’ is available to download below or can be purchased at the Cashier’s Office on the first floor of the Glen Ellyn Civic Center.  The Village also has regulations regarding public and private trees, which can be accessed through the corresponding Village Ordinance.

Parkway Reforestation Program

The Village of Glen Ellyn has restructured its Parkway Reforestation Program to include new options intended to offer opportunities for residents to expedite parkway tree planting through a lower cost Share-Cost Parkway Reforestation Program.  Residents may financially participate in moving tree replacement in front of their home up the priority list. A list of available spaces and their intended planting sequence is available below.  Share-Cost trees will be planted before those purchased by the Village.  The village currently funds the planting of approximately 200 parkway trees per year

Applications to participate in the Share Cost Program are available below, at the Civic Center (535 Duane) or at the Public Works Department (30 S. Lambert Road). To participate in the Share-Cost program:

  • Look up your address on the Removal /Replacement list if a parkway tree was recently removed adjacent to your home.  If a planting space exists, the correct replacement tree size will be listed next to your address.
  • If you have not recently had a parkway tree removed, look up your address on the Available Space list to assure a planting space exists on your parkway.  If so, the correct replacement tree size will be shown next to your address.
  • Print out and complete a Resident Share-Cost Parkway Tree Planting Program application
  • Attach the appropriate payment and mail or deliver to the Cashier’s Desk on the 1st floor of the Civic Center (535 Duane Street).  Credit card payments are accepted in person at the Cashier’s desk

As part of the modified Reforestation Program, the Village will also accept donations from interested residents to help fund the Reforestation Program into the future. Donated funds will be added to the annual budgeted funds to allow for additional planting opportunities. Residents may choose to send donations directly to the Village or authorize monthly charges on their residential water / sewer bills. Applications for the donation program are also available below, at the Civic Center, or at Public Works.

Parkway Tree Maintenance & Removal

Trees planted on the parkway (usually the area between the street and the sidewalk) are the property of the Village of Glen Ellyn. If you have concerns about the health or maintenance of a parkway tree, please call the Public Works Department at 630-469-6756 between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  A permit is required to plant or perform any maintenance on parkway trees.   There is no charge for these permits.

For maximum effectiveness, Emerald Ash Borer treatments should be done between April-May or September-October. It is very important that Village staff be made aware of any treatment to a parkway tree so it will not be removed during treatment.

Private Tree Maintenance & Removal

Tree care companies must be registered to do any tree maintenance or removals in the Village, whether on private or on public property. There is no charge for this registration.  A permit is not required to remove a tree from private property; however, by ordinance, removals by tree care companies must be reported within seven days after the removal is completed.

Tree Preservation

In an effort to protect those trees on public and private property, the Village requires a tree protection plan be completed before building permits are issued for certain projects.. To learn more, please see the Tree Preservation Plan guide below.  These ordinances are enforced by the Planning and Development Department.
