Are you planning to open a new business in Glen Ellyn? If so, the Planning and Development Department staff would be happy to talk to you about any regulations and approvals that the business may be subject to prior to opening.
The Zoning District in which the property is located determines the permitted business use. A change of use in an existing building, if permitted, may require building improvements for code compliance. All new businesses and relocated businesses must obtain a business registration and pass a fire inspection. Please contact the Department at 630-547-5250 for a preliminary review of your business plans and proposed location for compliance with applicable regulations.
The Building Code requires that a building permit be obtained prior to the start of any construction, alteration or remodeling work within the business space, the building, or on the property. Our staff can advise you of any work that does not require a permit, such as interior finishes, furnishings and display fixtures, but still comply with code requirements.
The Sign Code requires that a sign permit be obtained prior to the installation of any new sign or alteration of any existing sign. Special event signs such as banners and directional signs are also regulated and require a permit. Our staff can advise you of any sign that does not require a permit, such as window signs, nameplate and address signs, and portable temporary signs, but must still comply with code regulations.
Outdoor seating is permitted for restaurants on private property subject to certain conditions. Outdoor seating on the public sidewalk may be permitted with the approval of a license agreement by the Village. License agreements are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
You may also wish to contact the Glen Ellyn Economic Development Corporation (EDC) prior to opening your new business. The EDC is a not-for-profit organization that is responsible for facilitating economic development within the Village and may be able to help you locate a potential site for your business. The EDC can also provide you with information on the Downtown Retail Grants Program and any facade improvement grants that you may be eligible for. The EDC can be reached through their website at www.glenellynedc.com or at 630-469-0947
