The Village of Glen Ellyn is dedicated to creating a sustainable environment and encourages residents and businesses to do the same. Below is a list of actions that individuals, households and businesses can take to contribute to sustainability in the Village of Glen Ellyn. Reduce
Buy only what you need.
Buy high-quality products, and keep them for a lifetime.
Buy the largest size or quantity practical for your needs.
Avoid “use and toss” disposable products such as razors and paper goods.
Bring your own mug instead of using a disposable cup.
Rent, lease or borrow rarely-used items.
Switch to long-lasting florescent light bulbs.
Use free recycled mulch instead of purchasing new mulch.
Use preventive maintenance for durable items such as tires or appliances so they will last longer.
Make double-sided copies.
Reduce your trash by composting kitchen food scraps and yard trimmings.
Substitute less toxic products such as cleaners and pesticides when possible.
Purchase a rain barrel and utilize it to collect rainwater for lawn care and other needs.
Reuse
Give away unwanted items.
Donate reusable items such as housewares, clothing or furniture.
Reuse office supplies such as paper clips.
Sell unwanted items at garage sales.
Reuse the back side of single sided sheets of paper.
Pack meals-to-go in reusable containers.
Share magazines, newspapers and books.
Reuse packing materials.
Check secondhand sources before buying new equipment or furniture.
Repair broken items instead of discarding and buying new.
Bring reusable bags when you go shopping.
Recycle
Participate in local recycling programs. The Village and the Environmental Commission host an annual recycling extravaganza where unwanted items can be dropped off for reuse.

Recycle used motor and filters.
