Intent and Purpose
As a dedicated group of volunteers, the Environmental Commissioners consider the diverse issues facing our planet, our country, and our village in order to protect and improve today’s environment for the future. These efforts include educating Glen Ellyn’s government, residents, and businesses on environmental issues and opportunities. The Commission encourages conservation practices through hands-on activities within the community, and adopting new tools and services. The Commission also reviews Village ordinances and contracts where they have an environmental impact, in order to suggest areas of improvement.
The Environmental Commission’s recent initiatives and hands-on activities include:
  • Organized and managed the Glen Ellyn Recycling Extravaganza since 2003. The most recent event in fall 2012 collected over 30,000 pounds of recyclable materials.
  • Recommended for approval by the Village Board, adoption of Municipal Electrical Aggregation utilizing 100% clean electric power for residential households. Approved by the Board, December 2012. As many as 96% of households are benefitting, with an estimated cost savings of 40% per household.
  • Recommended for approval an aggressive Tree Preservation Ordinance. The Ordinance benefits included tree preservation initiatives such as prevention of diseases and tree mulching.
  • Developed a residential leaf mulching initiative.
  • Recommended solar-powered trash compactors for the Central Business District.
  • Recommended to the Village Board to preserve, rather than commercially develop, Stacy’s Woods
  • Hosted a Scout Earth Day Celebration and numerous other community outreach events
  • Implemented a Commercial Recycling Award
  • Recommended that the Village Board adopt the Cool Cities Initiative.
  • Recommended that the Glen Ellyn Plan Commission consider environmental safety and wildlife impacts from installation of sport lighting at Glenbard West High School.
  • Submitted a report on asbestos risks from teardowns.
  • Established a rain barrel purchase program.
  • Recommended that the Village obtain an Earth Flag.
  • Recommended that the Village obtain a solar trash compactor for the Downtown Business District.
  • Created an EnviroLinks button on the Village website giving residents more direct access to local and regional environmental information sources
