Coffee with the Cops

In December 2007, the Glen Ellyn Police Department began a new public outreach initiative dubbed Coffee with the Cops.  On the first Saturday morning of each month, the Chief of Police and/or the Deputy Chief(s) of Police play host to interested residents.  Coffee with the Cops provides residents with the opportunity to interact with law enforcement personnel in a non-enforcement environment.  Participants can talk about neighborhood issues such as traffic or parking; seek information on various police programs; and learn about specific police duties and responsibilities, such as investigations, traffic accident reconstructions and evidence collections.

Illinois Premise Alert Program

On August 28, 2009, the Illinois Premise Alert Program Act was approved and incorporated into the State of Illinois legislative law; CLICK HERE if you would like to read a copy of this act.

The Illinois Premise Alert Program is a safety program designed to enhance police and fire service to those Glen Ellyn residents who have disabilities and/or special needs, by providing first responders with needed information about individuals at a specific address.  The information provided to first responders is stored in a secure database that provides responders with information via a computer aided dispatch, prior to arriving at the scene. The Premise Alert Program is a voluntary program and free of charge.

If you are a Glen Ellyn resident and are interested in participating in the Illinois Premise Alert Program, please complete the Illinois Premise Alert Program Enrollment Form; CLICK HERE for a copy of the form. Completed forms should be returned to the Glen Ellyn Police Department, 535 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137.  A copy of the form can also be obtained at the front desk at the Glen Ellyn Police Department.

Illinois Secretary of State Emergency Contact Database
This database allows Illinois instruction permit, driver's license and identification card holders to enter their emergency contact information into a voluntary, secure database. Starting in August 2009, in the event of a motor vehicle crash or other emergency situation where a person is unable to communicate directly, law enforcement may access this database to help them reach the person's designated emergency contacts.

BASSET

In April 2008, the Glen Ellyn Village Board passed an ordinance amending the Glen Ellyn Liquor Code to require alcohol awareness training for those supervising the sale of alcohol and those serving alcoholic beverages.  This training, known as the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training, or BASSET, provides alcohol sellers and servers training regarding alcohol related laws and issues.  The BASSET program also provides alcohol sellers and servers with additional knowledge on alcohol and its abuse, and helps to ensure that Glen Ellyn and surrounding communities are a safe place in which to live.

The goals and objectives of the BASSET program are:

  1. Train and educate sellers and servers to engage in responsible alcohol service.
  2. Reduce and/or prevent driving under the influence occurrences and alcohol-related fatalities.
  3. Reduce and/or stop underage sales and underage drinking.
  4. Create safer communities and establishments where alcohol is served.
  5. Educate owners, managers and staff regarding state and local laws related to alcohol service.

If you are interested in registering for the BASSET program, please fill out the electronic form below and submit.  The program will be held on the third floor of the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, located at 535 Duane Street.  Classes must have a minimum of 5 and maximum of 25 participants and there is a $20.00 per person fee for attending the seminar.  For any additional questions regarding BASSET, please contact the Police Department at 630-469-1187.

Citizen's Police Academy
The Glen Ellyn Police Department is proud to offer residents the Citizen’s Police Academy.  The Citizen’s Police Academy is an eight-week program that introduces participants to the roles and operations of the Police Department through classroom discussions, field trips and “hands on” experiences.  The academy gives citizens a unique look inside their local police department.

The goal of the academy is to bring the community and the Police Department together as a team and enhance understanding of how the Glen Ellyn Police Department and its Police Officers function.  Participants will learn about a variety of topics, including gangs, drugs, personal protection and identity theft.  There is no charge to enroll in the Citizen’s Police Academy, however you must be at least 18 years of age and submit to a background investigation. Applicants will be disqualified from attending if they have been convicted of any violent crime or any crime that by its nature is deemed counterproductive to the spirit and goals of the Citizen’s Police Academy. Participants must not have any outstanding warrants.  While the Citizen’s Police Academy is open to everyone, residents of the Village of Glen Ellyn and people who work in Glen Ellyn will be given first priority for participation.

Applications for the academy can be picked up at the front desk at the Glen Ellyn Police Department or can be downloaded from the link below.  The completed application can be dropped off or mailed to the Glen Ellyn Police Department located at 535 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137.

Residential Security Survey Program
A Residential Security Survey is an inspection of your home, performed by a specially trained police officer, in an effort to identify areas in which you could improve the physical security of your residence. Click the link below for more information.
Child Safety Seat Inspections
The Glen Ellyn Police Department offers residents free child safety seat inspections by appointment.  Child safety seat inspections are critical to ensuring that the Village’s youngest residents are protected when in a motor vehicle.  If you are interested in having your child safety seat inspected, please contact the Police Department at 630-469-1187.

Why are Child Safety Seat Inspections so Important? Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death of children, ages 3 to 14. Many of these deaths can be prevented through the proper use of child safety seats. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), properly installed child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers, ages 1 to 4.

The problem is most parents and caregivers are unaware of the risk to children when they are not properly restrained in child safety seats. According to a recent study, 96 percent of parents and caregivers believe their child safety seats are installed correctly, but NHTSA research shows that seven out of 10 children are improperly restrained, putting them at risk for serious injury or death in a crash.

Emergency Identification Bracelet Program
The Glen Ellyn Police Department recently created the Emergency Identification Bracelet Program.  The program is designed to assist emergency personnel in identifying and assisting individuals participating in the program. The program is geared towards individuals with medical conditions, elderly individuals who may have special needs, or others who may need assistance in being identified.

The emergency information provided on the application form is electronically filed at the Glen Ellyn Police Department under a confidential code number.  This confidential code number is unique to each participant and is inscribed on the emergency bracelet along with the 24-hour telephone number of the Glen Ellyn Police Department.  If the wearer is subsequently found in need of assistance, cannot communicate clearly or is incapacitated, the emergency provider can call the 24-hour telephone number and emergency medical and contact information can be obtained.  This will ensure prompt and appropriate care and, in the case of an emergency, proper notification to whomever the program participant designates.

Applications for the Emergency Identification Bracelet Program can be picked up at the front desk at the Glen Ellyn Police Department, or can be downloaded from the link below.  The completed form and payment of $8.00 can be mailed to the Police Department or dropped off in person.  For more information regarding this program, please contact Officer Tom Staples at 630-469-1187.
